Alpha Ventus
Wednesday, 07 April 2010 14:38

In the domain of offshore windfarms, GeoSea has been working on the Alpha Ventus project. The Alpha Ventus pre-piling project was the initial phase of the foundation works for the construction of the very first German Offshore Wind Farm, 45 kilometers from the coast of Borkom, in water with a depth of approx. 30m, in the North Sea.

alpha_ventusThe main activity consisted of underwater piling from the Jack-up Platform Buzzard. The technique of pre-piling was successfully used for the first time on offshore windfarms.

GeoSea provided the Goliath for the Wind Turbine installation of Alpha Ventus. The Goliath is the largest jumbo jack-up platform of its type ever built, with a load capacity of 2000 tonnes and colossal legs almost 80 metres long.

The Wind Turbine installation of Alpha Ventus involved placement and assembly of parts for six 5 MW wind turbines. Each wind turbine consists of 2 tower sections, 1 nacelle and 1 assembled rotor. The components were loaded in Eemshaven and transported to the offshore site location using the Buzzard. At the offshore site location, the Liebherr LR1800 crane on the Goliath installed all components on the jacket foundation.

This project proved that the Goliath offers GeoSea a unique tool to grab a leading position in the construction of wind farms in far-shore deep waters.

For the Cameroon project, GeoSea provided the jack-up Vagant for the refurbishment and reinstallation of the tanker Wharf N°2 of the SONARA refinery located at Limbe.

cameroonIn the first stage of the project, Geocean used the Vagant for the reinstallation of a gangway, refurbishment of the unloading platform and removal of damaged dolphin (DAC12). At the second stage GeoSea installed 3 dolphins. This included the drilling of 5 sockets (Ø2000mm) for a minimum depth of 10m into ballast layer, installation and grouting of 5 monotube berthing dolphins (Ø1850mm).
